Was the XBox 360 Released Too Soon?

Less than a week after launch, xbox 360 owners have started to complain about several problems with their new xbox 360, mainly over heating and disk scratching. What seemed to be isolated cases several days ago, now appears to be more prevalent.

A reader of xbox Today claiming to be an xbox live technical support worker, believes that nearly half of the xbox 360s are broke.

I estimate at least half the 360's out there are broke... nothing but constant calls" explained the source

Regardless of whether-or-not the source does work for tech support, there is still a growing number of concerned xbox 360 owners with broken xbox 360s.

The question that most people are asking is; did microsoft launch the Xbox 360 prematurely?

Last time around microsoft actually launched too late. Sony sold more than 20 million units by the time microsoft sold its first 1.5 million. This time around, microsoft has the head start. The nintendo Revolution and the ps3 are both expected to be released in 2006, at least 6 months after the launch of the xbox 360. However, with the obvious shortage, and the growing number of complaints, MS large head start may have less impact then previously thought.

As the next few months play-out it will be interesting to see if MS can overcome the concerns with technical issues as well as the obvious shortage prior to the launches of the Sony Playstation 3 and nintendo Revolution. Either way, 2006 is shaping up to be a great time for gamers.

Configuring Wireless Networks

Configuring a wireless network involves setting up a wireless router or access point and installing wireless adapters on the networked computers. The wireless router must be placed in a central location because the computers closer to the router or access point obtain faster network speeds. The wireless router needs to be connected to a power source and a source of Internet connectivity so that all computers on the network are provided Internet access.

A wireless router is not mandatory for setting up a wireless network. Almost any computer with a wireless adapter and a wired connection to the Internet can be used as an access point. Next, the wireless network must be provided a name. This is usually referred to as SSID. All the computers on a WLAN must share the same SSID.

Each computer connected to the wireless network should have a wireless LAN card (also know as Wi-Fi adapter) installed. Wi-Fi adapters can be configured after installation of TCP/IP based networking on the individual computers. On computers using microsoft Windows operating system, adapters usually have their own graphic user interface accessible from the taskbar after the wireless networking hardware is installed. This allows a user to enter the SSID and enable the WEP. For a WLAN to function accurately, all the adapters must use same parameter settings.

One can also opt for automatic wireless configuration that supports the IEEE-802.11 standard for wireless networks. This minimizes the configuration that is required to access the wireless network. Once you enable automatic wireless network configuration on your computer, you can move across various networks without reconfiguring your network connection settings. As you move from one place to another, automatic wireless networking searches for a network that is available and notifies you about the same. You can select the network that you want to connect to and the network configuration wizard updates your wireless network adapter to match the setting of the access point of the new network.

Las Vegas Weather

Contrary to what some people think, las Vegas weather does have four seasons. Yes, the seasons are different than you would experience in a Northern state, but they exist nonetheless. Let's take a look at what they are like.

Normal high temperatures in las Vegas, in the middle of winter, are around 55 degrees farenheit. daily normal lows hover around 35. Lows have been recorded as low as 8 degrees. Temperatures into the 80s have been recorded in March as winter was ending. las vegas hasn't has a major snowstorm in years, but in January 1979 las Vegas received 9.9 inches of snow, and in January 1949 las vegas was hit with 16.7 inches! January and February tend to be rainier than most months, but they still average well below an inch of rain.

The normal high for las Vegas in Spring starts around 70 degrees, and by the time Spring is ending the average high is 100. Temperatures as high as 116 have been measured near the end of Spring, that's just a degree short of the highest temperature measured in las vegas in the past 80 years. Spring is particularly dry in most years, with less than half an inch, on average.falling in the months of April, May, and June combined. Humidity is also low, and bottoms out in June.

The normal high for Summer in las vegas is over 100, although is dips below 100 after September 1. Humidity increases in July and August, and the number of thunderstorms increases to about 3 per month for those two months. Lows have been measured in the 50s in September, but 80s is normal for July and August, dipping into the 70s in mid September.

The temperatures in Fall decrease faster than they increase in Spring. The daily average temperature on September 1 is 99, by December 1 its 60. If someone tells you they were swimming and sunbathing in las Vegas in the Fall it was probably not late Fall. Rain levels are lower than they are in January, February, July or August.

There are two weather phenomenon that can be potentially dangerous in las Vegas (three if you consider the rare but potentially crippling snowstorms). One is wind. wind can happen any time of year, and gusts into the 90s have been recorded in the flat, open valley that las vegas is situated in. wind is rarely life threatening, but its strong enough that you should take it into consideration when enjoying the outdoors here. The other, more serious problem, is flooding. Rain amounts that wouldn't raise an eyebrow in many locations can cause flash flooding in Las vegas. Besides having hard ground that isn't very absorbent, las vegas is in a bowl-like valley, surrounded by mountains. Water runs from on high and accumulates in low lying areas. Pay attention to flash flood watches and warnings, and unless its an emergency stay off of the roads during a flooding situation.

Mike McDougall has lived in the las vegas area for 20 years. His website, http://www.lasvegasweather.us, was created to give locals, tourists, and people considering moving to las vegas a quick look at the climate in las Vegas.
